Outtakes from President Clinton’s appearance at the Chappaqua Library • 12.13.11
Besides talking about serious economic issues in his appearance at the Chappaqua Library Friday to sign copies of his new book, “Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy,” (read the story here) President Bill Clinton also took a question on what books he is currently reading.
He said he is finishing two and recommended both. The first is “Washington: A Life” by Ron Chernow about George Washington, which he said is important for understanding America. The second is a turn-of-the-20th Century New York City mystery by Stefanie Pintoff, though he wasn’t specific about which of her books he was reading. He was taken with the description of the street scene in New York in 1906 with electric cabs fighting for space with new gasoline-powered autos and horse-drawn carriages.

It will feature a lively talk by Steve Courtney, author of the award-winning book, Joseph Hopkins Twichell: The Life and Times of Mark Twain’s Closest Friend, and on the staff at the Mark Twain House, in Hartford, Ct.
“It comes as a surprise to many that Mark Twain’s closest friend was a New England Congregationalist minister, the Reverend Joseph Hopkins Twichell,” says Courtney. “The two met when Samuel Clemens was in Hartford in 1868 on a business trip, and instantly hit it off … when the Wild Humorist came to dinner with the Twichells, he rose to leave at 9 and stood talking at the door until 11, holding a small pile of books borrowed from his new friend.
