The Volunteer Center of the United Way and Westchester County launched a series of volunteer events in commemoration of the Sept. 11 attacks Tuesday with an event writing thank you notes to soldiers and police officers.
County Executive Robert P. Astorino, Alisa Kesten, executive director of The Volunteer Center of United Way, Uday Sukhatme, provost of Pace University, and Pace students participated in the event kicking off “9/11: Serve & Remember,” which will include more than 25 service events at area nonprofit organizations through Sept 11.

The week culminates with day of activities Sept. 11 at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla from noon to 6:45 p.m. Visitors can donate new and gently used soccer and baseball equipment to be used by U.S. troops abroad.
Westchester’s memorial ceremony will begin at the memorial at the plaza at 7 p.m.
