The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester (BGCNW) announced today that Elizabeth Stephenson has been selected as the 2013 Youth of the Year, the highest honor awarded by the club to a member. The National Youth of the Year program honors club members for developing superior leadership skills, overcoming personal challenges, achieving academic excellence and performing outstanding service to the club and the community.
Stephenson is a senior at Fox Lane High School.
A 15-year member of BGCNW, Stephenson has volunteered more than 300 hours since 2011 and remains active in her church and school. She has participated in a number of programs including the Wilfred Jennings Summer Leadership Program, the Junior Staff Program, Money Matters and the Keystone Club, where she served as secretary and then president. In this role, she spearheaded “Families Helping Families,” an event that joins community and club families together to donate Thanksgiving goods and create baskets for those in need during the holidays.
“The Boys & Girls Club is not just a building on Main Street, but rather a place I consider my home away from home,” Stephenson said in a press release. “I’ve been positively influenced by so many of the people here. With their help, I’ve grown to become a mentor for the younger members.”
In addition to her work at the club, Stephenson has volunteered as a candy striper at Northern Westchester Hospital and is a member of her church’s youth group, where she takes part in the monthly food drive.
She has earned high grades throughout her educational career and will further her passion for science by attending Hampton University in September 2013 where she will study at the School of Pharmacy.
Stephenson will be awarded the Youth of the Year honor at the 2013 Humanitarian Award Dinner taking place on Saturday, June 1 at Lexus of Mt. Kisco.
