North Salem High School senior Daniel Vazquez has always liked show tunes.
“I’d sing songs from musicals for my girlfriend, from ‘Les Misérables’ to ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ to ‘Phantom of the Opera.’ And she always complimented my voice.”
But Vazquez had never set foot on a stage till this spring, when his girlfriend, Natalie Tiffany, suggested he try out for “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” the all-school musical featuring kids from grades 6 through 12. Tiffany is a perennial star at North Salem: Last year, she played Swedish nightingale Jenny Lind in “Barnum.”
Vazquez auditioned and landed the role of Prince Charming. And who did director Doug Coates cast as his Cinderella? Natalie Tiffany.
Having landed the role, Vazquez has been on a crash course to learn everything from upstage and downstage to stage left and right. He says Tiffany, who “has been acting since she was a little kid,” has been with him every step of the way.
“He’s always singing, so I thought it would be a good idea,” Tiffany says with a giggle. “And playing Cinderella is a little girl’s dream. It’s one of my dream roles.”
They realize that tiny theatergoers may very well be at the stage door, autograph books in hand.
“I’m actually really excited,” Tiffany says.
