Three teenagers from Ossining, Yorktown Heights and Chappaqua are getting national recognition for their scientific research and hoping for national attention at a competition this weekend.
The competition is part of the Siemens Foundation to encourage teens to conduct research in science and technology.
From Westchester, here are the teens and a description of their projects:
• David Hamann of Yorktown Heights, a senior at Yorktown Heights High School, competing with a project where he investigates a new method of using solar energy without costly batteries.
• Jiayi Peng of Chappaqua, a senior at Horace Greeley High School, competing with a physics project where she uses a computer model to examine how varied neurological mechanisms can differentiate a healthy brain from one with a devastating neurological disorder.
• Daniel McQuaid of Ossining, a senior at Ossining High School, competing on a team with Vickram Gidwani of Demarest, New Jersey, with a biochemistry project where they develop a novel compound that may induce significant cell death in multiple types of cancer.
This Friday and Saturday the three teens will travel to Carnegie Mellon University to present their research as part of the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, a science research competition for high school students.
A total of 2,255 teens nationwide entered the competition. Only a select few are named a Regional Finalist. The top award is a $100,000 scholarship.
At the Regional Finals at CMU, students will present their original research to university judges during two days of competition. Altogether 15 teens from New York City, Long Island and Westchester will compete this weekend.
