The third annual softball tournament and family day to honor the memory of Stephanie Crispinelli, the 19-year-old Somers college student who died Jan. 2010, during the Haiti earthquake, will be held July 15 in Somers.
The event is a family fun day. It is also a fundraiser for the Stephanie Crispinelli Humanitarian Fund, which her family and friends created to support projects — schools and social service work in underdeveloped countries — that Crispinelli would have favored. She was on a humanitarian mission during with her college, Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. when she died. The fund was established in partnership with the Westchester Community Foundation.
Last year more than $20,000 was raised at the tourney to support nonprofit, U.S.-based charities.
Organizers of the softball tournament are encouraging new and returning participants to assemble their teams now. The day also includes games, face painting, raffles, music and a barbeque. Tte event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Reis Park, 82 Primrose Street/Route 139, Somers.
There will be approximately 12 teams, in which each team will present a color and have a team name. Companies have sponsored teams in the past two years, but players also raised money with the team to meet the $600 price of admission.
