Just as the weather is getting colder groups in Somers and Briarcliff are holding their annual coat collection drives this month to collect unwanted warm outer garments to give to the needy. Look for the boxes at locations noted below and drop off suitable garments.
As it does each year, the Somers Rotary will hold its Annual Coat and Sweater Drive from Oct. 16 through Nov. 6. Collections boxes are set up throughout the Somers shopping areas and other places where people congregate — including the post office and Somers Town Centre. Donations of coats should be clean and in good condition. The Somers Rotary distributes the clothing to a number of northern Westchester organizations helping those in need.
The Briarcliff Girl Scout Troop 2877 is holding its winter coat and sweater drive to benefit Ossining Food Pantry members. Donations of gently-worn winter jackets, coats, sweaters and boots for all ages accepted. Collections boxes are in the lobbies of Todd Elementary School and the Briarcliff Middle School and also at Wells Fargo Bank on Pleasantville Road and Value Drugs off Route 9A and North State Road.
And, there is the Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless, Inc., which is collecting winter coats. The process begins through its website.
