The American Cancer Society Relay for Life will hold its event in Somers on June 3-4. It begins at 7 p.m. at the Somers Middle School and continues until 7 a.m. June 4.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where groups of friends, families, neighbors and coworkers form teams to walk or run around a track to raise spirits, awareness and funds to fight cancer through American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient & family services. The photo above shows lights from a previous Luminaria Ceremony where candles are lit in memory of those lost to cancer and honoring survivors.
Former and current cancer patients, those who have lost a loved one to cancer and the general public are invited to take part in this team and family-oriented event. Participants can camp out at the Relay site, and when they are not taking their turn walking, take part in activities and enjoy local entertainment.
This “celebration of life” is intended to brins the Somers community together in a unified effort to fight cancer. Teams from companies, religious groups, organizations, hospitals and schools collect donations and can win individual and team prizes for their efforts. Information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay For Life is available from the American Cancer Society. To register a team call the American Cancer Society at 914-397-8822 or go online.
The first Somers Relay for Life was sparked by the Somers Leo’s Club participation in Yorktown’s Relay last year. More than 40 people attended the Kick off in February at Somerfields and since then 22 teams — with 180 people — have been formed. Many community leaders, groups and businesses are getting involved and sponsoring or contributing to the event. Sponsors and donors such as Patsy’s Pizza Bronx River; Equipment, LLC; Athlade Sports Drink; Somers Lions; FC Somers Soccer club, Anthony DeVito LLC; Cardillo Pools and Spas; and Westchester Adventure Boot Camp.
