Visiting hours are today and tonight for Sal Matero, a longtime Briarcliff public works employee who died Friday after suffering from a brain aneurysm while at home in Putnam Valley.
Matero worked for Briarcliff Manor for 20 years as assistant general foreman for water in the village. He was also a unit head for the Civil Service Employees Association union.
“All of Briarcliff Manor is in shock and sorrow at the untimely passing of Sal. We are all heartbroken and in disbelief,” Village Manager Philip Zegarelli wrote in a letter on Saturday to the municipal employees and friends.
“In Sal, (the village) lost a kind and considerate employee, a highly skilled and knowledgeable leader with a quiet and friendly manner who was dedicated to his family, his work responsibilities, his fellow workers, friends and this village,” he added.
Matero was born on June 27, 1960 in Tarrytown to the late Sam and Dorothea Matero. He lived in Putnam Valley and before that in Croton. His survivors include his wife Deborah and his children Greg and Emily.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St., Croton. A Mass will be at 11 a.m. at St. Columbanus Church, 122 Oregon Rd., Cortlandt Manor.
