The Rotary Club of Somers collected at least 2,000 pounds of coats and sweaters for the needy in northern Westchester, says club President Martin Ashley.
Club members began two weeks ago by placing collection boxes throughout Somers. The donated items were given this week to a area charities, including the Katonah Community Center, Neighbors Link in Mount Kisco and area churches.
Somers Rotary member Ed Liss collected from the Linconldale post office, and said he was impressed with the quality of the donations. “People donated leather coats, and some coats that still had the labels on them. I even picked up one fur coat” he said. “It’s incredible how generous people are,” reports the club president.
The over-sized collection boxes were donated by Whalen Moving Company.
Ashley estimated that over 1,000 coats and sweaters were donated and now keeping needy recipients warm. He said the club plans to run the coat and sweater drive again next year.
