Open space formerly known as Dubos Property is renamed to reflect purpose

The property in North Castle formerly owned by the Rene Dubos Center for Human Environments has been renamed the Byram Lake Preserve.

The town of North Castle, which bought the land along with the village of Mount Kisco earlier this year, made the name change his month. The municipalities bought the land with the help of the Westchester Land Trust to keep development there from damaging the water quality in Byram Lake, the drinking water for Mount Kisco. North Castle Supervisor Reese Berman said the name now reflects the function, “which is to preserve the lake.”

Tom Andersen of the Land Trust said if other properties in the area are protected they could be added to the preserve.

“It’s one of the parts of the county where we’d like to protect more land,” he said.
